Master slide footer slide number does not show up in normal view

I have tried to add a slide number in the master view like this:


This field was added via the Field/Slide Number button:

(Also notice that this individual box did not adapt to dark mode)
I have also a date area on the left side:

When I switch to normal view the date shows up:

but not the slide number:

Do you have a check mark for Slide number in Header and Footer?

This solution did not work for me. I’m using LibreOffice 7.4.6.2 and have not found how to get the slide numbers to appear using the master slide. Very perplexing…any suggestions?
