The hardware and OS requirements were checked and met. The download went fine. I unzipped. I followed the LO installation guide exactly. It appeared to install but there is no sign of the application???
Give me a clue please someone.

Many thanks for the reply. Prior to this I completed a second try at the install and it failed again. Synaptic claims that it is installed however?? The /opt folder has no LibreOffice files. The desktop-installation folder has only one item - libreoffice4.0-debian-menus_4.0.4-2_all.deb. Running your commands in any of the folders returns a “not found” type error. Still no further forward. Simply can’t understand why this is SO difficult as I have never had problems previously.
Do you have any files under the /opt
location? It sounds like the desktop-integration/
component was either not installed or it did not successfully create the required menu entries. They are fairly easy to create yourself if necessary by making an entry for each of these:
libreoffice4.0 --writer
libreoffice4.0 --calc
libreoffice4.0 --draw
libreoffice4.0 --impress
libreoffice4.0 --base
libreoffice4.0 --math
libreoffice4.0 # this last one is required to access the start centre
