When I now download the file, my screen shows the words of the document, but not the pictures as inserted and saved. The space only for the picture is shown with a title such as: Picture 1

You perhaps recently updated LO and this inadvertently changed your user configuration (quite frequent under Window$).
Go to Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>View and see if Display Images and objects is checked.
