More questions about version 24.x [update from 7.6.7.2]

I have more questions about version 24.x.

I have 7.6.7.2. When I click on update, it tells me that version 24.2.6 is available. Can I safely mix 7.6.7.2 files with 24.2.6 files or should I uninstall 7.6.7.2 & do a clean install of 24.2.6? I won’t lose any of the documents that I’ve created, right? I’ll just have to start from scratch on the recent documents listing, right?

I just checked the download section of Libre Office. The 7.X version is not even available for download anymore! Interesting!

24.2.x is the “normal” successor to 7.6.x. TDF board just decided to change the numbering scheme, adopting 2-digit year for the first part and month for the second one instead of the somewhat-obscure (for general audience) technical id. There is no tremendous gap between 7 and 24. You can now tell how up-to-date you are in your version.

There will be two yearly releases, one in February z.2 and one in August z.8.

Proceed just like you did in the past.

Since you didn’t mention your OS, I can’t give you any particular advice on how to proceed. If you’re under Linux, just trust your distro maintainers to sync the repository with upstream LO and wait for the “latest” release to bubble up.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I have macOS Sonoma 14.7.

Thank you for clarifying. So, “24” is for 2024, “2” is for February, I guess “6” is a minor update.

Now, please clarify the following:
The previous stable branch of LibreOffice(24.2.7), which we are still maintaining until November 2024. What happens to this download after November 2024? It’s already November. If I download 24.2.7 & install it, what happens as of December?

When I click on update, 24.2.7 is available for download. If I want 24.8.2, I need to manually chose it for download. I wonder if I can set the download to automatically download the 1st one listed instead of the 2nd one.

I downloaded & installed FreeMacSoft’s App Cleaner. I guess that one should do a clean install.

Why you ask about the download? At some point, that page will feature a next version as the download… and this version, as all others, will still be available in the download archive (which is available at the bottom of that page).

As wrote, it will be no more maintained. But why aren’t you worried about that unmaintained status of your current 7.6.7.2?

There’s nothing that I can do about 7.x. I want my Libre Office up-to-date. So, I need to decide which 24.X version to download - 24.8.2 or 24.2.7.

24.2.7 is the final update of the February release. So, I might as well download 24.8.2 & install it.

The best that can happen using a third party uninstaller is that it won’t corrupt the removed program so much that you can’t install a newer version. It will probably also remove your templates, spell check words and settings.

Always use LibreOffice installer to do the uninstallation or update.

I didn’t know that Libre Office has an uninstaller. Where is it?

First, it isn’t necessary to uninstall LibreOffice when upgrading, the installer includes an uninstaller to remove the earlier version safely.

I believe the normal way to uninstall programs on a Mac is to open up the Applications folder, find LibreOffice, and click-drag it to the Trash. Empty the trash.

I do not recommend 24.8. This version seems to be a faulty one to me. I wait until some of the bugs are fixed and then install a later minor version of 24.8 or a new 25.2.
