Multi-segment lines

I have used AOO for a long time and am now using LOO.

But I am having a difficult time drawing a multi-sgement line the way I used to do it. It used to be I could select polygon right angle, click, drag mouse, click, drag mouse and put the line where ever I wanted it to go. Now it tries to connect or simply puts the lines where it thinks they should go, but inserts them on top of other things I have drawn. BTW, I am using Impress.

What can I do to draw a multi-sgment line with right angles where ever I want to put it.

Many, many thanks,
Ray

To draw a polygon at a right angle, press the Shift key.
Please note that Impress and Draw process graphics equivalently.

Maybe this little tutorial will help you too.

Thanks for the immediate reply. I am not trying to be difficult, but did not help

If I select the polygon option and start trying to draw lines, LOO keeps moving them around to connect other objects… I cannot put them where I want them to go (n.b., I am drawing complex engineering diagrams).

Older versions of LOO and AOO before it pretty much let me put the lines where ever I wanted them to go. This is why I use LOO instead of PPT, but now LOO is doing the same thing that PPT does.

The only work around I have found is to draw the lines on a blank page roughly in the shape I want, then paste them in my diagram and use the Position X, Position Y, Width, Height dialog boxes get it where it needs to go. But that takes MUCH longer to do.

With the recent versions with this points option, I am just wondering if the old way of doing it located somewhere else and I cannot find it… it works much more efficiently then this points feature does. FWIW, I cannot make the points feature draw lines the way I want.

Suggestions???

Many, many thanks.

Maybe I am missing the obvious, but I sent this note after several hours trying things and reviewing several tutorials. I can do all kinds of cool things with splines and curves that you could not do in the past. But the simple “click and drag” with 45 or 90 degree angles, and putting them exactly where you want them, just does not seem to work like it used to. I also tried adding points to straight lines after clicking the polygon option, but I could not get it make the lines showing paths go exactly where I want them to in my engineering diagrams; they seem to try to align on 0.1" boundaries for example, or line goes between two objects instead of the one I want to put it on. Like I said, I can edit the lines using the position X, position Y, height and width dialogue boxes, but it took me much longer to do what I used to do in a few minutes.

On the positive side of things, I have not had LOO go into one of those crash and recover cycles or clobber embedded images like earlier versions have.

I am a relatively experienced AOO/LOO user (I only use PPT under duress!). AOO just does not seem to work very well any more, so I started using LOO several years ago. Note I use LOO mostly for engineering diagrams.

Many, many thanks,
Ray

Please have a look at menu View > Snap Guides. There are likely a lot of items checked, which you do not want to be checked. Do you have previously worked in Draw? Impress and Draw have some different default settings.
