My background image in impress template shrinks

I have created a template in impress with a JPEG image as a background, covering the entire slide. Whenever I choose a slide layout using the template, the background image shrinks to only the centre part of the slide. Why is this? I want the image to remain the size of the whole slide.
one.odp (573.1 KB)
two.odp (571.5 KB)

Edit the template and click Slide > Slide Properties > Background and under Options > Style set to Stretched.

Probably the background image is currently set to Custom position/size. If you don’t want the image distorted but just stretched then in an external image editor crop it to the same ratio, e.g. 4:3, 19:9, etc. as you set the slide to, then set new cropped image as background, stretched.

That didn’t work. Thanks for trying to help.

Please post a sample. Click the pencil icon to edit your question, then use the upload icon to upload your .odp sample. Cheers, Al

At the moment you have a cloud image set as background, do you want the mountain image?

The mountain image has another layer over it in pale blue with a graduated transparency to reduce contrast and make it easier to read the text that goes over it. Both these need to be merged together and saved a jpg.

  1. We can use the image from one.odp as it is already stretched to size
  2. Open the Sidebar, click the Navigator icon (looks like compass) and Ctrl+Click Shape 3(image) and Shape 4 (shape) to select both
  3. Click File > Export. In the dialogue that opens navigate to a folder, click box Selection, Save as type JPEG, and give it a name, e.g. mountain&gradient.jpg. Click Save.
  4. Leave it set at the low resolution, you don’t want it to be a big file.
  5. With the image saved, just click Slide > Set background image, navigate to, and select your image and OK. It defaults to stretched in the background.
