I’ve been using NeoOffice for many years. After updating to High Sierra on Mac OS NeoOffice told me they couldn’t guarantee compatibility of my current version with High Sierra and that I should update to the latest “professional” version, which wasn’t free. I did so and find that version has a major bug (it crashes when I try to update styles, either from a template or a file). I’m assuming the latest version of LibreOffice doesn’t have that bug (I’m downloading it but haven’t tried it yet.) While this is far from on objective forum, what arguments can people here give for preferring NeoOffice to LibreOffice?
While I agree with the answer, especially being LibreOffice developer, I still cannot think that such comparisons are reasonable here, because they would be biased by definition. But I’d love some comparison by someone who have used both, and could make an up-to-date list that could be useful for anyone.
The easiest answer is: NeoOffice is based on LibreOffice 4.4 + some stability and security patches (+NeoOffice specific stuff)
So: NeoOffice is based on a 3 year old LibreOffice.
NeoOffice is backed by 1 (in words: one!) developer.
LibreOffice is backed by ~50 (no definitive data available) full time developers + hundreds of volunteers (devs, qa, translators, marketing, design, simply “community”, etc, etc.)
Oh and by the way: see also following answer: Does LibreOffice make NeoOffice obsolete for Mac users?
Well, i’ve been using Neooffice in Macos since long ago, since 2005 probably. Is an excellent software. I feel it has a more dedicated and functional interface, a more comfortable feel than Libre, which I use in a windows environment.
NeoOffice is not based in a 3 year old Libre version, as the precedent commentary says; is a fork from Star-Open Office, as well as Libre is.
The point about how many developers it has behind is a tricky one: one developer can make a good job, 50 developers can make a mess. NeoOffice works very well in MacOs, and keep a few native features. In comparison, I work faster and more efficiently with NeoOffice; Libre always forces me to think what am I doing and how to get out. It is not a custom problem, Libre interfaces are less human, maybe because of the 50 volunteer spartans.
A style problem, I think. Neo Office has style. No joke, I mean it.
Apart from that, both do the same; with a little amount of extra effort if yoyu choose Libre.
