Something really wrong is happening in my Writer. I’m entering caporals: « and » using ALT+174 and ALt+175 when I do so the new line I’m typing in, is deleted and the open caporal is inserted in the row above instead. I don’t know what to do, I tried re-opening the document and opening a new one. I do not understand if I have mistakenly enabled some Write or Window function, but this is slowing my writing down quite a lot.
I wouldn’t trust Alt+numerics. This is a specific Window$ feature which was implemented before Unicode was in wide use.
I don’t know what “caporals” are. Perhaps you mean U+00AB LEFT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK and U+00BB RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK. In this case a more reliable entry method (integrated into LO) is to type the sequence U+AB (the four characters “U” “+” “A” “B”) or U+BB followed by pressing keys Alt+X (don’t type the +, it only means simultaneous press here).
ab
(or “bb”) and Alt+X
works for me. (LO 7.1.8.1 on Windows7).
In Spanish, “«” and “»” are the preferred quotation marks.
You can set LO to replace the regular double quotes with the angled ones in menu Tools
- Autocorrect
- Autocorrect Options
- Localized Options
.
There is more text in the new line, or only the quotes?
Could it be an AutoCorrect option? Not sure.
Share the LibreOffice version you are using. Thanks.
Just to complete:
Alt + 174 and Alt + 175 only work in conjunction with the numeric keypad on the keyboard.
Is Numlock turned off on the keyboard? The alternative functions might be causing odd behaviour with the cursor although the ALT+[numbers] replacement is still entered when Alt is released…
NumKey 4 without NumLock is Left Arrow, this may explain, but not with me, that…
Aha…the symbols are like corporal (caporal) stripes on their sides.
This was the issue! I noticed it after struggling with this issue for some time. My cat must have stepped on the keyboard and turned it off. It is always some cat fault, always!
