New Writer document doesn't show new text

LibreOffice version 7.6.2.1 on Windows 10

Start LibreOffice, open Writer, select new document.

No matter what is typed - or pasted from Notepad - nothing appears on the screen.
The status bar shows the number of words and characters, but the page is blank.

Editing older ODT files works fine.

What could be the problem here?

What font are you using?
Do you get the same result when using a different font?
Did you enable Hidden Text for some reason?
By chance, are you using a white font on a white background?

If you wish to find out, create a new document, write some (invisible) text, then save your invisible.odt and upload here for inspection.
.
As this happens for any “new document”, the faulty setting is mist likely included in the default template, used for newly created files.
.
One easy way out could be to open one of your old files, delete all text in it, then use “Templates > Save as Templates” and save as e.g. NewEmpty.ott. Then set this NewEmpty as default template for new files.
