Have set a template as default and was sure I could still open blank docs. But using the different ways to open a new writer sheet only brings up the template!??
Don’t post twice! If you think you forgot an important piece of information, edit your question. Otherwise, you confuse users and get yourself confused. Answers are spread over the occurrences and you need to check both.

Due to duplication, this question should be downvoted back to 0 because the other occurrence has additional detail.
Noted and down voted. Good job.
Resetting Writer’s default template as the default
To re-enable Writer’s original default template as the default:
-
From the Menu bar, choose File > Templates > Manage Templates.
-
In the Templates dialog (Figure 5), click the Settings icon on the bottom left.
-
Point to Reset Default Template on the drop-down menu, and click Text Document.
This choice does not appear unless a custom template had been set as the default, as
described in the previous section.

The next time that you create a document by choosing File > New > Text Document, the
document will be created from Writer’s default template.
Thank you.
You are welcome. But in the future keep in mind not to double post, it causes confusion and disorder.
Well, everything I am trying to do with Writer is causing confusion and disorder. That’s why I asked the question. The answer did get me back to the default document. But I would also like to use the template I managed to create.
They would be used for two different projects.
Am spending a lot of time with Writer manual, so hopefully will understand more in a week or so.
