What do the numbers mean when I spotlight the document?
AFAIK, they are used to disambiguate colour perception. Some colours may be rather close together and we can have problems with our eyes (colour blindness or simply old age). Then a reference number makes clear that the style is different from another one.

So, they don’t tell me it’s for eample: Heading 1, 2 etc.?
The mapping number → style is shown in the Navigator. Numbers increase monotonically from top to bottom.
