Odd highlighting in ODT doc

I just switched from Open Office to LibreOffice (25.8) on my Windows 11 yesterday. When I opened a document I use often, there was a 2 character wide yellow highlight on one page. When I tried to delete it I ended up with a whole line of text being highlighted. Nothing I do will take it off! It’s definitely not the normal highlighting. I tried to copy it so I could show what was happening but “copy” was greyed out on the drop down menu. Help!

Can you upload a sample document including the problem lines plus just a few lines each side. Save a copy of the document and in it delete everything except the lines needed. Cheers, Al

May be you have the tracking changes activate?
If so, untick the record Changes in the menu Edit > Track Changes > Record and accept or reject the changes. Chapter 3, Working with Text: Advanced

I’m a novice so don’t understand what you’re suggesting. Sorry!

sampleproblem.odt (13.2 KB)
Ok, I don’t know if this works or not. I didn’t see an attachment icon.

  • Forget the trackin changes

This is a direct format of paragraph, (not the format of text)

  • Right clic in the paragraph and chose Clear direct format

you can read the Chapter of Writer in the Getting Started Guide Getting Started Guide 25.2 - Chapter 2, Getting Started with Writer

THANK YOU!!! That did the trick!

Pam

Your “Transunion” paragraph has a yellow background. It paints from margin to margin.

BUT, your whole sample (and I guess your original document) is totally direct formatted which makes global fix impossible. You must hunt manually every attribute you want to change.

You can set and reset any attribute with a right-click and

  • Paragraph for anything related to paragraph “geometry” (paragraph background is one of these)
  • Character for typography, but this operates character per character unless you first select a run of characters

You should learn how to use styles. @bantoniof gave you the link.

I also see that the base paragraph style is Normal. Was your document initially written with Word? This Normal style is a common signature in Word.
