odt document does not open

Your last 2 comments sound contradictory. In both cases you click Continue in Safe Mode.In the first case you get the LibreOffice window as expect, while in the second case you are requested to send a crash report (which by the way seems pretty improbable since Safe Mode doesn’t know anything about the history due to using a temporary user profile). What happen in the case after you have sent the bug report? May be you just do the following now:

Reset your LibreOffice user profile performing the following steps:

  • Right click -> Run on Windows Start menu (or Windows Key + R)
  • Type "%ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice\program\soffice" --safe-mode into Open text field (including the double quotes)
  • Select option Reset to factory settings
  • Activate [x] Reset entire user profile
  • Click button Apply Changes and Restart

Thank you again!
I executed the procedures. The LibreOffice restarted and two windows appear one on top of the other. One window with a title: LibreOffice (Safe Mode), and another window on the top of the other entitled “Safe Mode” with options to my user profile from which I already did the reset of the intire user profile.

And now - Does it start normal now? Do you still get the behavior and messages as per your original question?

No improvement at all. It gives me alwasys the same error messages.

Even in Safe Mode ??

It is possible there is something I am missing. I am really confused.
I select “continue in Safe Mode”, I get an error message that says: “Due to an error LibreOffice crashed. All the files you were working on will now be saved. The next time LibreOffice is launched, your files will be recovered automatically”. But no files appear under “the following files will be recovered”.
When I click “OK”

The “Safe Mode” window where I selected “continue in Safe Mode” has “Restore from Backup” selected. Is it possible some change was necessary on that window because it gives a number of options?

I am grateful for your patience.

The “Safe Mode” window where I selected “continue in Safe Mode” has "Restore from Backup

This doesn’t matter as long as no other of the two following options is is selected (which actually would restore the backup - you remember the Advanced thing). But if you are here and then clicked on button Continue in Safe Mode and you still get an “LibreOffice crashed”-error in Safe Mode - then you need to reinstall LibreOffice (which is my last ressort). Hence my advice is:

  • Uninstall current version
  • Right click -> Run on Windows Start menu (or Windows Key + R)
  • Type %ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice into the Open field (File Explorer will open)
  • If there a still any files in that directory - delete `em
  • Right click -> Run on Windows Start menu (or Windows Key + R)
  • Type %appdata%\LibreOffice into the Open field (File Explorer will open and show a directoy named 4)
  • Rename the directory to 4.bak
  • Reinstall LibreOffice
  • Test

I arrived at Rename to 4.bak
Then I am not sure how to reinstall LibreOffice. Because I would not like to make a mistake about it. I know the process of going to “Control Panel” uninstall and then agin from the web installing the application. Please could you indicate the right procedure.
I have to mention also that I did update LibreOffice from 6.2… to 6.3… just after I encountered the problem and before I send the question.
Thank you.

I know the process of going to “Control Panel” uninstall and then agin from the web installing the application

yes - exactly use that procedure, but assure the order uninstall → remove any remaining files in %ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice → install again

I did the reinstallation of LibreOffice application.
I tried as ever to open my “.odt” document and it gave me the usual error message: “Unfortunately it seems that LibreOffice crashed when it was last run”. Then as ever it tells me to send the error report.
Unfortunately, it is important document which I would be a disaster to lose.

As a matter of fact I am using Windows OS, in case this information matters.

I realized that it is only one .odt documets that does not open. Other .odt documets do open normally. Also about the documents that resists to open, I see that it has a duplicate file preceeded by “˷lock”. Also when I point cursor on the icon of the document, I see that its name is repeated twice.
What could that mean?

Oh my god - you never in that long thread mentioned that you get the error only when opening a file. That means: Delete file .~lock.<name_of_the_file_producing_the_error># and the error will go away.

I deleted all the ~lock files I could discover. They were all of the same document as I have a copy of it in different directory. I mean on desktop, in dropbox, onedrive, etc. as a back up. But the document does not open. I get usual error message. And a new ~lock file is created where I tried to open the document.
And when I point the cursor to the icon of the document I see that its name is duplicated.
Is there anything else one can do?

Rename the file and try to open the renamed version of your file. What does happen?

I renamed one of the copies of the document. Tried to open it, but the same behavior.
I did not have any problem with it until 2 days ago.
I do not remember to have done anything special that day.

I am also perplexed by what I read on the internet. That ~lock files appear when there are multiple users. As far as I know I am the only user of my computer.

Your files - are they stored on some cloud service like OneDrive, GoogleDrive or something like that? If not, I got absolutely no further idea what you are doing and what’s going on with your system.

I do have a copy of the document with problem in Dropbox and OneDrive each. They behave in the same way.
I had tried to open them when the copy on my desktop refused to open.

As I said before yesterday, after cliking “Continue in Safe Mode” it showed me a message: Your user profile has been exported as “libreoffice-profile.zip” I clicked “Open containing folder”, I tried to unzip winrar that appeared to the desktop. New icons came on the desktop which I collected to one folder.

But the fact that the file’s name is duplicated does it mean something? It shows, the name of the .odt file producing the error, OpenDocument Text, again the name of the .odt file producing the error, my name (author), date of modification, size of the document. Could this mean anything?
I mention it in case that could lead to something.

Other documents that opening normally do not have such anomaly in their name.

Please, I am in desperate need of having my problem solved. My file, as I mentioned in the other comment, shows duplicated name. I just feel that could indicate something. Myself being completely ignorant about computer problems cannot decipher it. Please, help me!
