ODT file not showing correctly after saving and closing

Hi there

I typed up my CV onto a microsoft .docx template, which I opened in LibreOffice. I saved the LibreOffice document as an ODT file. However, after closing and re-opening the document, barely any of the text has saved, and the format is very strange.

In the thumbnail preview image, I can still see my old CV with all the correct formatting.

Is there anyway that I can get the CV to open correctly? I put so much work into that CV and I’ll be distraught if I can’t get any of it back! Even if I can just get the text back, that would be amazing.

This is what the template looks like:

Here is the thumbnail, which is correctly formatted

Any help would be appreciated massively!!

I’m using Libre Office 6.4.4.2, and running Windows 10 on an ASUS laptop.

Thank you

Your registered tag is “common”. Does that mean you are working with all modules "Writer, Calc, Draw, Impress, etc.) at the same time? I think not.

Please change the tag and specify the module you are working with. Thank you.

In addition, please specify your operating system and LibreOffice version.

Please don’t post an answer if it is not a solution to your initial question.

“edit” your question or write a comment. Thank you.

To get to the reason of the problem, it would make sense to upload your file here.

To upload, “edit” your initial question and use the paperclip icon.

Though a screenshot is not an ideal diagnostic tool, it looks like the document is made of many frames. This is the most problematic compatibility case between .docx and .odt when it comes to position preservation. Unfortunately, most designers don’t understand the position parameters and very frequently use the wrong ones. This results in the frames being sent in the wild because they were not anchored where they should.

It can even be worse if “text boxes” have been used because they are not full text processing units but accessory decorations.

Add to that you have a font issue: the original faces are probably not present on your computer and have been substituted. The metrics are not the same. Text is wider and overflows the boxes as shown by the red triangles.

I’m very curious about the structure of the template. If you can’t attach your CV for privacy reason (or can’t make an anonymous version of it), do attach the template.

Hey Ajittoz. Thank you for your reply.
I ended up re-writing the CV on another program. I’ll close this question down.
Cheers
