Opening document changes directory time (last modified) even if no change made

Windows 10 Pro 22H2, LibreOffice 24.8.0.3

Opening a file with Writer or Calc changes the directory time and date as shown in File Explorer (last modified) to the time and date when I opened the file, even if I make no change. This doesn’t happen if I open the file with another program, for example a binary editor.

This seems to be new behaviour, and I don’t see it mentioned in the release notes.

Is this intentional or should I file a bug report?

Hello and welcome!
Have you heard of “lock files”? It’s a file called ~lock.filename.odt# And yes, it’s created in the same folder (otherwise how would another copy of LibreOffice find it?) and deleted when the file is successfully closed. And if you create a file in a directory and delete it, the operating system remembers the date when the directory was modified.
Would you like to view files without leaving traces of such viewing? In this case, you can open files in “Read Only” mode (there is a special checkbox for this in the file open dialog) - and then the lock file will not be created. Or create a copy of the folder and open files from there
