Over document restart, all my level 10 index entries shifted to level 1

I have a custom level 10 theme for my paragraph entries, that I mark manually.

I marked them all at lvl 10 yesterday. Saved and closed the document, when I opened it this morning, everything was fine.

But then, I hit refresh…

For absolutely no reason, my 35 manual level 10 entries were shifted to level 1. I have to do this all over again, with no guarantee that this will hold.

Is there something I missed, please ?

Edit : I just tested manually to reproduce : Right-click an entry > Edit the entry > Change level from 1 to 10 > Apply > Save the document > Close it > Open it > Edit the entry again : it’s back at level 1.

I am not sure to understand what you want to achieve. So, let’s start with general details: OS name, LO version and save format.

From the dialog you show, you’re trying to insert into the document outline something which looks like a heading. Unless you have specific reasons (and please describe them), it is much simpler to style the paragraph as Heading 10 and you control its numbering with traditional Tools>Heading Numbering. From a structural point of view, it is considered as “illogical” to leave “holes” in the level structure. So choose the level which fits “naturally” within your hierarchy.

Possible causes:

  • your document is saved as .doc(x) and the feature is possibly not present in DOCX
  • transient behaviour: Insert>TOC & Index>Index Entry is primarily intended for creating entries in the Alphabetical Index where only three levels are allowed. It is possible that when transferring from Alhphabetical Index to TOC, the key is erased (and this is a bug).

On my side (Fedora 42 with KDE Plasma destop, LO 25.2.6.2, .odt), I don’t experience your mishap.

I recommend that you switch to the more traditional Heading n method with a big advantage: you are not compelled to duplicate paragraph text into the index entry. Paragraph text is automatically transferred to the TOC.

Hi, thank you for your answer.

Not an option for me. What I want to achieve is “titres coulés”, which are paragraph titles immediately followed by the content of the paragraph, to give a clue about what it will be about. I can’t change a style withing a same paragraph without my document falling apart (Prolongement de la numérotation d'un niveau de chapitre inférieur après changement du niveau supérieur - #14 by Kalytis), which I’ve read is a normal LibreOffice behaviour.

no, ODT.

That’s what I’m fearing. I’m entering my index entries into my document’s table of content, so there’s no reason for it to behave weirdly.

Ubuntu 24.04.3, LibreOffice 25.2.6.2 installed through ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-prereleases, documents saved as .odt

This can be done either manually through a cross-reference to a hidden heading (under various guises) but it can quickly become boring if you don’t create an adequate AutoText entry (because the feature requires several “components”)
or, thanks to an addition in recent 24.x releases (unless I mix things with an M$ Word compatibility item), automatically with a “magical” command.

Here is the manual procedure:

  1. at start of the paragraph where the inline (or run-in) heading should be, Insert>Frame
  2. while the frame is selected, apply frame style Inline Heading
  3. enter your heading and style it Heading n

CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION! Don’t try to “fix” position of the frame with the mouse or right-click + Properties: you’ll introduce direct formatting it is impossible to remove other than deleting the frame and recreating it.

Built-in style Inline Heading is not well configured (personal opinion); you must adjust it. My recommendation is to change in Type tab Vertical *Position to Bottom (keep Character.

If the change does not show up immediately, apply style Formula to the frame, then back Inline Heading.

If you need some spacing between the heading frame and the paragraph, use the Wrap tab of the frame style, Spacing Right. Don’t use space characters as their width may vary.

For “Inline Headings” built-in,
You must select a part of the paragraph (From the start) and apply a Heading (1,2,3 etc…) this create the frame neccesary and include it in the TOC.

  • In some localized versions it is necessary to select the frame and apply it the frame style “Inline Heading” (In the Language of the Interface)

The manual edition of the TOC contents is not recommended because it is lost as soon as the TOC is updated.
It is best to adjust the titles to the corresponding level and adjust the TOC layout.
