Password accidentally got stripped during a recent save in Calc 26.2.3.2

In LibreOffice 26.23.2 I often use a password protected spreadsheet; however just today (7/8/2026) the application, Calc, stopped asking for the password when I open the file. My solution was to basically resave using “Save as…” and selecting the password option again. Anyone else have this issue?

As far as I know, this happens when the document has been restored from unencrypted data after a crash.

This is true; however, it does not apply here. This file has been encrypted for decades.

Recovery data are always unencrypted. LibreOffice removes them when the file has been closed successfully. If LibreOffice crashed for any reason while the file was open, it may be recovered as an unencrypted file.

By Jove, my good man! You are 100% correct. There is just one wee caveat I discovered in my testing. After forcing the application to crash, the “~lock” file (should reside with the original encrypted data file) must be deleted to ensure encryption failure. Now what does that tell us my good friend?

I have no clue. Encrypt files with a 3rd party tool?

Well my requirements fall short of that solution; however, your suggestion is probably preferred by most. I discovered another “lock” file, I would like to test. I’ll let you know if anything worthy comes from it.

You can/will always discover lock-files, if LibreOffice opens documents. They are not related to encryption, but may help to detect, if another task/program has zhis fkle open.
