"paste as unformatted text" not always available

LO 7.4.3.2
OpenSuse Leap 15.4

I’m very frequently copying and pasting content from websites, e.g. post adresses etc, into LO Writer docs.

This does NOT work with:
ctrl-v - “Desired clipboard format not available” (translated from German)
ctrl-shift-v and select “HTML” or “unformatted” - same eror than ctrl-v

I’ve found, that
right mouse buttonmenu - paste content - unformatted text WORKS,
also the shown in menu “shortcut” ctrl-alt-shift-v works. But to learn ctrl-alt-shift-v I’m a little bit too old and - as a side note - I’m running out if fingers for this

But: clipboard content for sure is available, and this worked fine in previous releases.

As I’m using ctrl-v/strl-shift-v frequently, IMHO a standard shortcut cross all OS and apps, would be cool to get it back, annoying small bug.

Q: Is this a distribution (OpenSUSE) specific bug, or general?

My usual guess: you are using some clipboard “manager” destroying clipboard formats.

I cannot reproduce this. Can be an issue with your distribution, but even more likely: it is an issue with the desktop you are using. That, provided you installed LO using the tools of the distribution, and not manually.

Linux systems have a second clipboard which is always plain text. If your mouse has 3 buttons or a scroll wheel, do a click on the middle button or the wheel respectively.
A touch pad can be set up to simulate mouse clicks by tapping on it with one, two or three fingers which simulates the normal, right and middle click.

Like most desktop applications, Writer menu has underlined characters which respond to the Alt key. Using Writer with English user interface Alt+E drops down the edit menu. “Paste_S_pecial” has the S underlined which opens the next menu level where “Unformatted Text” is on top. So the sequence Alt+E S Enter is an alternative way and you don’t need to learn it by heart since the underlined characters lead you until you can do it blindly some day. Almost every office command can be reached like this without grabbing the mouse.
Clicking the left and right mouse button simultaniously might also simulate a middle-click.

Writer’s main toolbar has a paste icon with a little drop-down arrow. Either you click the little arrow or you hold the mouse key for a second on that icon in order to get the drop-down menu which also includes paste-special unformatted text.

Thanks for answering and helping!
I know all this ways how to workaround, but this was not really my question.
Esp. when writing texts in LO Writer, I’m much faster when not forced to use anything else than my keyboard. So I know (of course) a lot of shortcuts for positioning in text, switching windows, selecting, copying and pasting.
And as ctrl-v / ctrl-shift-v are the standards for pasting, I want to know why they are not working anymore, and how to report this. If this is a specific OpenSUSE bug, I’ll report in OpenSUSE’s Bugzilla.

I have
Version: 7.5.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: fcbaee479e84c6cd81291587d2ee68cba099e129
CPU threads: 16; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 22621; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: en-US (en_US); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded
running on Windows 11 and Ctrl-v -Ctrl-C work fine for me.

What have been your copy source?
On Linux bug seems to be dependent on source of paste (copy origin):

  • when copying internally, from LO Writer or Calc to Writer: ctrl-shift-v → “unformatted text” works fine. “Source” is shown correctly as “LO …”
  • when copying from any other source I’ve tested, e.g. from Firefox, Thunderbird, Terminal bash session, or even plain-text Editors “source” is shown as “unknown source” and no ctrl-shift-v → “unformatted text” possible, as described.

On Version: 7.5.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 81bce3cd17f5e01886721863a4fa0d99f91033a6 CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: nl-NL (nl_NL.UTF-8); UI: en-US Calc: threaded, (Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS), Ctrl+Shift+V opens the selection dialog for paste spacial as expected. So it might be related to OpenSUSE, but then you should maybe ask about that in an OpenSUSE forum.

my occasional external copy sources have been Chrome, Notepad, Thunderbird and all worked perfectly for me at the time.

Called primary selection containing the currently marked text, whereas clipboard is, well, clipboard. (there’s also a secondary selection, but that’s rarely used at all).
