Posting to the table of contents with mixed chapter numers and no chapter numbers

I would like to post Preambles/Epilogues to the table of contents without chapter numbers.

I would like to post an Appendix to the table of contents without chapter numbers. In this case, the Appendix and Headers style inherits from Heading but the Appendix does not appear in the TOC although the Headers, with chapters numbers, do.

I would like to post Appendix headings to the TOC preceded by the Appendix letter, as in A.1.1. If I do this by altering Tools->Chapter Numbers then this is a global property.

If I need to post this as three separate requests then I will, but I thought that the issues were so closely related that one ‘ask’ would do.

Is any mixed mode TOC entries possible? If not then should I forward this as an enhancement request?

It is easy to create chapter heading without numbers:

  1. put the cursor at the very beginning of the heading
  2. press Bksp
This suppresses the number, creating an unnumbered entry both in text and in TOC

This trick will work with preamble, appendix or epilogue without the need for a separate Heading n paragraph style.

Creating an appendix with a different numbering schema for the chapters (e.g. alphabetical vs. numeric) is a bit trickier because you need to define another ad-hoc independent numbering sequence. This is done with a list style (fifth icon from the left in the style side pane).

  1. create a new list style with name Appendix
  2. adjust Customize and Position to define the schema and indentation of your sequence
For your peace of mind, don’t use the other tabs because they mess up all your manual settings

Once this is done, you can derive Appendix n paragraph styles similar to Heading n. The simplest way to guarantee consistency is to click on the Heading n in the style sidepane, right-click and New. Then go to Outline & List tab

  • Outline: set the level to n
  • Apply List Style: select the Appendix list style you just created

Usage

The Appendix n styles format a numbered list (which will be echoed into the TOC) but contrary to Heading n there is no automatic assignment of the style to level n. When you style a heading as Appendix 3, your paragraph is initially at level 1. You must manually promote it to level 3. For that:

  1. put your cursor at the very beginning of the heading (you’re there when you initially type it)
  2. press Tab n-1 times
If you pressed too many times, use Shift+Tab to demote the heading.

PS: please edit your question (don’t use a comment) to mention OS name, LO version and save format. Note that, due to the use of a list style, this solution is valid only if you save native .odt. Saving as .doc(x) will cause an approximate translation and you won’t be able to edit reliably your document in future sessions.

@ajlittoz As, no doubt, many have said before, thanks.
I would follow your suggestion if I knew what your suggest was ( please edit your question (don’t use a comment) to mention OS name, LO version and save format). I do not how to edit my question, and I do not understand your suggestion. I assume that you would like me to mention OS name and LO version, this was an oversight on my part. I do not understand what you mean by “save format”. I “save” my document as an odt file, and I usually export my documents as a pdf file. If any future work is required, then I always go back to the odt (LO) document, make my changes, save them and then create an exportable version as circumstances require. My concern, as you have expressed, is that varying from the ‘native’ LO formatted files introduce issues which I can avoid by using the LO file.

Your procedure is wisdom.
For OS name, I expect Windows, MacOS, Linux, … LibreOffice version is reported by Help>About LibreOffice
