"Recover" after crash silently failed and lost work. Proton drive sync folder?

I just lost a lot of work. I was working on a few documents for hours, and then Writer crashed. On restart it did it’s usual thing of saying it would recover files, and I said yes, and it acted like it did… but it didn’t. All 3 files are as they were hours ago. A few things about my system are different from usual. One, I’m on Windows. Two, I was working on files that are in a folder that is supposedly being synced to Proton Drive.

I wonder if this related to the latter. As anyone else had problems with file recovery not working in cloud-synced folders? I wasn’t editing the files on another computer so the sync should not have been copying anything to my folder and overwriting my files. I don’t think that’s what happened, since the file doesn’t even exist in Proton Drive yet (ie, it has not yet been copied up to the cloud).

Working with open files in a cloud will IMHO always lead to problems sooner or later.

If you want to work more securely, you should only open and edit files if they are on a disk on your computer.

For your future work you should make a few small improvements, see:

Preventing data disaster

Thanks, I will review that page.

The Proton Drive folder is, I believe, a normal folder on my own hard drive, with a background process that uploads the files. Probably my mistake was not being familiar with Libre’s auto-save behavior. Hard to know after the fact though.
