My entire list of saved documents have been accessible in RECENT DOCUMENTS. Today my entire accumulation of files has disappeared. RECENT DOCUMENTS is completely empty. How can I retrieve them? At 89 I am late to the game and not very computer savvy. Please Help!
Have you recently upgraded LO? If you are under Windows, the upgrade process tends to erase many customised settings.
I’d recommend not to rely on the Recent Documents list as it is dynamic and mixes all kind of files (Writer, Calc, …). Instead, organise your documents in a hierarchy of directories (folders) and put a shortcut to the most used ones on the desktop. This arrangement is immune to upgrade side effects.
I guess you saved your documents to the default location.
Assuming you have a Windows computer:
- Open Explorer (WinKey+E)
- In the left pane, click on the folder Documents and look for your documents in the right pane. Double-click the files to open them
Please excuse me for posting and not listing my specifics. My computer is a MacBook Air, my OS is Ventura 13.2.1, my version of LibreOffice is 7.3.3.2.
When I downloaded LibreOffice, pal, who recommended
it, KNOWING I AM A COMPUTER MORON taught me all I know. He told me that I should use the extension, .docx on every document I created. I have and the end result is this catastrophic loss that occurred yesterday. I must also ADMIT that I’m not totally certain that .docx is the extension I’ve been using. If I was a betting man I’d bet every cent of my wife’s secret savings…but I’m not a betting man. ANY AND ALL HELP GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED!

Saving .docx from Writer is the most reliable way to accumulate problems. With any application, save native, here .odt. Otherwise formatting is not guaranteed to be stable because of the conversion/translation when loading and another conversion/translation when saving.
Use alien format only for exporting your document to a recipient who insists on the format (Word nowadays pretends it can read .odt). Always work in native format, even when you get feedback from the recipient.
Anyway, this format issue doesn’t explain why the Recent Docs list has been erased.
Thanks for the wake-up call! Any suggestions for how to discover why my saved documents disappeared and how I may be able to locate them? I’m investigating the use of Mac’s FINDER to search for them but terrified of worsening the problem in some way. Again, many thanks for your response!

Isn’t there privacy protection software that allows you to clear recently opened files lists in the apps on your computer? Doesn’t or didn’t CCleaner or a similar app have such a feature?
