Saved documents open as page blanks

I have typed and saved many documents in recent months including just a few day ago. Now when I open them, the text has vanished.
I have verion 26.2 updated when it came out. No issues observed until today July 29 2026
No updates from Microsoft recently!
Help and advice please
TP

Hi @TP26.2, where were they generated and how were they saved?

Good day Gilberto,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I was using LibreOffice(Writer) ver: 26.2 I saved my documents " Save As " and then made sure to Name of File (sometimes including date). Saved as an .odt file.
So after I left my earlier question on the forum, I went onto the Libre Website and found an update 26.2.5.2
Downloading and installing that at first I had a message saying the download was interrupted and failed to install.
However, it does appear to have installed and now my saved documents all appear to be there and open properly. So by what ever means, my ver: 26.2 must have been corrupted???

Your thoughts and comments please.
Thanks again
T

I guess that your anti-ransomware has blocked LibreOffice from writing to the Documents folder. You would have had a pop-up in the bottom left corner of your screen saying that soffice.bin was blocked.

If you are using the in-built Windows Defender then:

  1. Click Start menu > Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > manage ransomware protection > Allow an app through Controlled folder access
  2. OK the UAC dialogue
  3. Click Add an allowed app > Recently blocked apps
  4. In the dialogue click on soffice.bin (C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program). LibreOffice will be added to the apps allowed to write to Documents folder.

If you use a third party anti-virus then you will need to add LibreOffice or soffice.bin to its allowed list

Thanks Alistair,
Nope…No pop-ups and I don’t use Defender. I do use Kaspersky Premium and I have settings pretty rigid and also carry out routine full scans.

What I have done recently is sign up for the extended Win10 Quality updates and as it happens, it recently updated just two weeks ago on July 15 2026… Coincidence??

Clearly MS updates has had serious issues over the last several months.

Any possible connection do you think???

Another possibility is if you use OneDrive, then it might have made your files online only and left just stubs/placeholders. You would need to look up settings for OneDrive as I don’t use it.

In that case you really might need to add soffice.bin to the Allowed list

side note … Kaspersky and the Russian government - Wikipedia

Alistair and Pierre,

I don’t use OneDrive either.
As for Kaspersky, I have bee using for many years and seemingly without issue. I never use Passwords Managers or store any sensitive personal details on the computer or phone. So far I believe that it has detected many potential malicious intrusions and served me well.

I am strongly leaning towards my recent MS updates causing “possibly” corruption of LibreOffice??? Doing a LibreOffice update seems to have repaired my issue. I will certainly keep a close eye on it.

I’m seriously “considering” a complete switch to Linux but not just yet.

I am a novice when it comes to software.

Regards.
