Vertical space is a premium on my screen. I would like to move the icon bars from the top to the side. Presently, I have 2 horizontal lines and the ruler. I want the ruler at the very top of the screen, The first icon line split in 2 lines on the left and the bottom moved to the right. The left and right idea is a bonus. In the end, I wand 3 vertical icon lines. Can this be done?
Thanks Hoader
You didn’t tell why you need the toolbar icons.
There is another workflow (more professional in my opinion) where you can dismiss practically all top toolbars: styling. You keep the style side pane (F11 except under MacOS where you Styles
>Manage Styles
). The pane lists the available styles (or used styles depending on your choice for the view; several types of list are possible) category per category. With consistent styling, you only assign styles to paragraphs, sequences of characters, pages, frames, … You no longer need to press icons on toolbars which has the huge drawback of creating direct formatting. Direct formatting is barely manageable and results in “formatting nightmare” when you review your document.
This means you have tuned or customised the set of styles you intend to use. The best practice is to create your own document template with the styles configured to your needs and taste, then to base new documents on this template.
