"selected JRE is defective" (java for database)... on Mac High Sierra... how to fix?

hi people,

just wanted to experiment and learn some database stuff. I’m running Libre Office 7.2.5.2 on Mac High Sierra - probably the newest version i can use on this older OS. Therefore I’m wondering if the Java kit I installed is not compatible with my older OS or my older OfficeLibre?

Errors i get are these:

“LibreOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new JRE and select it under LibreOffice - Preferences - LibreOffice - Advanced.” // also, “no Java installation could be found”

I used the DMG version of the “jdk-20_macos-x64_bin” file. Is there an older legacy JDK that I should be installing?

Any help would be appreciated. I don’t do command-line stuff well, so the self-install (dmg) files would be what I need. thanks for any advice.

Please have a look at this thread: LibreOffice 7.2.4 native Apple Silicon

Don’t know if this is available and running on Mac: Set Tools → Options → LibreOffice → Advanced → Optional Features → Enable experimental Features. This is needed to create an internal Firebird database instead of a HSQLDB. You could switch the experimental features off after you have created the internal Firebird DB.

Firebird doesn’t need Java, but wizards in Base and the Report Builder won’t work without Java.
