Separate files history

Why did you merge file history? It is annoying to have in Calc files history from all other apps. And, when you use 2 apps frequently and third app just sometimes, you will never ever have history for this third app. Is there a way how to have a separate files history for each app?

Why did you merge file history?

We did nothing, since most people answering here are users of LibreOffice just like you are a user of LibreOffice and they all share the same experience. If you like to add an feature / enhancement request, file here: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/

Why not just have a logical system for filing documents so you can always find a document even from years ago?

Hello,

no, there is no way how to have a separate files history for each app. There is an enhancement request tdf#56696 No option to make recent documents list show items for just the currently active LibO module.

Hope that answers your questions

A workaround for you?

I assume there are reasons for what the old (>8 years) feature request @anon73440385 pointed to was not yet seriously addressed. If I was a developer, I also wouldn’t have done it. Simply too many different points of view among interested users I might need to consider, to many additional options needed to account for them, …

The few professional developers should be expected to be interested in features mainly insofar also business usage comes into sight - and a business would
-1- most likely not rely on such toys.
-2- If yet, they would have somebody able to implement a local solution well adapted to their needs.

An outline of what to do for a non-business user:
– Create a history document .ods with one or more sheets for different types or with related filters.
– Do this in a way that each entry has an associated link. (Use the HYPERLINK() function.
– Place this document into an additional subfolder of the user profile.
– Create a macro able to write the url of an open document into the appropriate cell of the history.
– Take precautions distinguishing whether or not the document is currently open.
– Enhance the macro implementing wanted conditions and modifications.
– Implement precautions concerning documents not yet saved.
— Optionally (may cause complications):
— Create another macro with very few lines to call the mentioned macro.
— Assign the second macro to the document event Document is going to be closed for LibO.
— Create a link to the mentioned history document (on your desktop most likely).

From now on use the mentioned link to start LibreOffice if you want to see the enhanced history, and to search for the douments you want there. Default links will act as usual if not the optional measures were taken.

Clever! I don’t suppose you have the code?

You “dis-supposed” correctly.
However, I analyzed the subject and the concept I posted to a slightly greater depth, and am considering now, to implement a version for use by myself. Anyway I wouldn’t have a Q&D “solution” failing every other day, or needing enhancements at short intervals.
A matured solution (if any) would need some time. Professionals might tell me that any solution based on spreadsheets is Q&D unavoidably, and that a database must be used…
Despite the fact that databases come with advantages, I prefer solutions open to “creative” usage, even taking the chance of losses due to bad handling…
You see? Lots of open questions. And my remaining term is limited…
Would you like to do it? Make an Extension of it? No copyright claimed by Lupp  .
