Solved: How to rotate text

Some months ago I created a DVD case sleeve in a text file: landscape orientation, three columns, the centre one only 1.5cm wide for the spine. I found a simple way of rotating the text on the spine so that it read downwards – I thought by using Format>Rotate or Flip, though I may be misremembering. I’d click on the narrow centre column which would rotate horizontally so I could type the title, then click again and it would go vertical.
Today I’ve been trying to do the same thing without success. The Rotate or Flip options are greyed out. I searched LibreOffice Help and found a very complicated solution involving View>Toolbars>Drawing – which in any case didn’t work.
Am I missing something obvious?
Any (preferable simple!) solutions welcome.

Please edit your question to show a photo of the layout you’re trying to achieve. Images can be attached to questions with the “slide” tool (don’t use the “paperclip” as it will not display the image).

Remember that a DVD is a rotating disc. You can then use a horizontal table with 3 rows instead (or equivalent set of paragraphs). This could be easier if you dont need both vertical and horizontal text.

Can this help?

Thanks. That’s not how I did it last time, but I’ve been able to get it to work – which I couldn’t from the OpenOffice Help description!
Grateful for your help.

Please, follow site rules: don’t add “Solved” in the title. Make an answer with the procedure you ended up with. Don’t forget to remove your “non-answer”, otherwise this question will confuse other users and be worth nothing. Then tick the right answer. Considering your karma, you won’t be able to do that but others will. Come back in ~10 days and close then the question with the right reason.

Remember we’re benevolent users trying to help other users. Keeping the site tidy is the best service to people having the same question.

  1. I have no idea what “the ‘slide’ tool” is – and in any case my description is perfectly clear: we all know what a DVD case sleeve looks like!
  2. I don’t understand the relevance of your comment that “a DVD is a rotating disc”. I’m designing a sleeve for the DVD case.
  3. I do need both horizontal and vertical text – that is the whole point!

Was that an automated response?

This is not a solution to your problem. According to site rules, this additional information should be written either as an edit to the question or a comment.

Please, use the more link in your “non-answer” (only you as answer owner can see it) to "repost as a comment).

  1. The “slide” tool is located in the toolbar above the edit window when you enter/edit a question or answer. It is not available in a comment.

  2. I add in mind a label for a DVD. I disregarded the word “sleeve” present in the question. Apologies.

  3. It is now clear your vertical text is for the visible side when DVD are stored on a shelf, but 1.5 cm seems to me wide. have you multi-discs sleeves?

Anyway, unless you need very sophisticated formatting, Writer is not the right tool for this task. Use Draw where its text can be slanted to any angle and positioned anywhere in the page.

We should understand your “perfectly clear description” but you refuse to understand what is perfectly clear to users of this site (using the “slide” tool while editing a question). Congrats to that attitude …
