trying to sort a writer document alphabetically … table … drop down shows sort by … but sort by is greyed out so cannot be picked.
What am I doing wrong
Ver 25.2
Quote from the help file:
Sorts the selected paragraphs or table rows alphabetically or numerically.
these arrows are greyed out so they cannot be selected
Select the entire table, then click sort.
- If just one cell is selected, it will grey out the sort icon/menu item
- If just one column is selected it will sort just that one column
- If the entire table is selected it will sort the entire table based on the sort in the column(s) chosen in the dialogue.
I have tried these answers but nothing I do will show the sort as an option ( always greyed out ). I must have something wrong but I cannot see what I am doing different to what you say.
Can you sort any of the tables in the attached document?
Maybe find an explanation?
SortingWriterTables.odt (70.0 KB)
Yes I can
Can I assume that sort works for table format and not for straight word docs?
If so, that is what I am doing wrong.
Nothing states that it needs to be writer tables and not in writer doc.
Tools > Sort
→please, attach a sample document and screenshot to prevent spiraling guesswork.

thanks to all for your help.
I was able to achieve what I needed by using tables and then sorting from there.
Did you read the preceding comments? The help does not give the complete story which is why Mike created a bug report.
For normal paragraph text
- Select the text
- Click Tools - Sort
You are correct… the help answers I saw were all pointing to the “sort” under table option.
- Click Tools - Sort works in normal text which is what I was trying to do.
Thank you for your help in getting me to the correct option.
