Space above table

I’ve looked it up but I can’t add text above a table at the top of a document. Whether I press ENTER or ALT+ENTER before the first character, I break the page. Sure, I can type text, but I don’t want the page to break. I want the text right above the able.

What am I missing here?
Many many thanks.

Don’t forget to tell operating system and LibreOffice version. - Thank you.

Do you want a caption for the table? Select the table, right click it and select Add caption. In the dialogue make sure to choose position and table. If you select Table I think it positions the caption above the table anyway.

The caption will not be on a different page from the top of the table

Does it mean, you have a page break before the table? Attach a sample file for analysis.

This sounded promising and is worth knowing about, EarnestAI. And you are correct that the caption is above. But it still breaks the page.

Aha! you led me to wonder whether my problem was the size of the table (5 pages).
I split the table after only about 3/4 of a page and then a simple carriage return allowed me to add space for text above.

To re-attach the two tables, I saw a MERGE TABLE choice in the menu but couldn’t make it work unless I shortened the next table.

So, I conclude that all the commands that work with short tables (less than a page) will not necessarily work with long, multi-page tables.

I’ll come back to make sure I’ve learned all I can from you three gentlepeople.

Meanwhile, I’m very grateful.

No, ajlittoz, there were no page breaks in the file at all.

Thanks for your offer and interest, Grantler. As you can see, I stumbled upon what I think is an explanation and imperfect solution.

Managing long tables is a bit different from short tables. The settings are in the Text Flow tab. They control how tables and rows will break (as a whole unit or line per line) which has an impact on the amount of blank space left in a page.

Thanks for the elaboration, ajlittoz. I know I looked at those text flow settings and fiddled a bit without satisfaction. But I can’t swear that I explored them exhaustively. I will turn my attention there next time I have to open that file and see whether I can make a difference. I’m a little doubtful, but I don’t want to miss anything here, so I will try.

You’re welcome. In case you meet difficulty, you can always contact me through private mail to send your document (caution with size limit) for in-depth analysis.

Spacing above and below table is set in properties.

  1. right-click on table and Table Properties
  2. go to Table tab
  3. set Above and Below spacing as needed
  4. OK

PS: due to subtle differences, always mentions OS name, exact LO version and save format.

Thanks, ajlittoz. But I don’t want white space. I want to be able to have text above the table. And the Help file says I can do that with what I indicated.

And apologies for insufficient info. It’s LibreOffice 25.8.3.2 under Windows 11 Pro.
