Special character in Calc using keyboard

Hi,

I’m looking for a way to insert a special character into a cell in Calc using the keyboard on a Mac. The characters I’m trying to type mostly are ő and ű (and their upper-case variants). Please note these are not ö and ü (o-umlaut and u-umlaut) but “small letter o with double acute” and “small letter u with double acute,” as described in the Insert Special Character grid (U-151 and U-171 respectively). They are used in Hungarian, among others.

These do not appear in the standard Mac set of options displayed when holding down the relevant key.

I’ve read the help page here, which suggests using Command+Option+X to identify the hexadecimal code and toggle between that and the actual character.

Unfortunately, this key combo does not work for me. It simply produces an x. It does work in Writer but not in Calc.

I’ve looked at a number of other posts about inserting special characters using key commands but none of them seems to address my use case, at least not as far as I can tell. Some recommend Autotext but I don’t see that option in Calc. Others recommend writing a macro but that seems laborious and I don’t know if it would even work for what I’m trying to do. (I’m out of practice with writing macros and have never done it in Calc.)

So… does anyone know of a way to produce these characters using keyboard commands? If my specific question is answered in another post, please point me in that direction. Thanks.

The Command+Option+X key combo is not assigned in the Calc Keyboard.

  • You must assign this combo to your configuration and the command is something like alternate Unicode,
