Special Characters

Where do I find the special characters in Writer? I know it’s Insert->Special Characters but I’m not finding the ones I want. For example the phone or email symbols. I’ve seen screenshots of them in LO but I can’t find them. Were they taken out in an update?

Thank You

If your AutoCorrect is already populated from install and you are using a major form of English you may be able to type :phone: to get :phone: (U+260e), or :envelope2: to get :incoming_envelope:. Have a look in Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options, make sure the language is set to your default document language.

Have a look at https://emojipedia.org/ for other characters to copy and paste if easier. In Writer if you place your cursor immediately after the character and press Alt+X you will see the unicode number, press Alt+X again and it will become the character again. It is worth noting that they will appear differently on different operating systems

Insert>Special Characters allow you to insert any Unicode character. However, Unicode contains nearly 150k characters. Therefore if you don’t know in which block the one you’re looking for resides, there is little chance you find it browsing the dialog.

The Subset menu is there to narrow the search. It is likely that your symbols are in the Dingbats or Miscellaneous Symbols subsets.

As mentioned above, the Unicode standard defines a very large number of glyphs. They are obviously not all present simultaneously in a single font. Consequently, after selecting Dingbats, take care to choose an appropriate font in the Font menu.

Alternatively, enter a word like “phone” in the Search box. This will filter all glyphs containing the “word” in their Unicode name.
