although spellchecker is set to ON, it does not appear to be checking what I write
any suggestions please;
Do you have the relevant dictionaries installed? What language is shown in the status bar of your document?

searching, I find this page English dictionary » Extensions
wondering then how to install into LO, if I download
now worked out what status bar is; and where it is;
our language (English NZ) is shown there
