Split window worksheets/tabs feature suggestion

work on two worksheets open within the same book in calc, both open in a split-screen fashion, either vertically or horizontally, with adjustable height/width

at first, to implement, only operate with currently active/focused worksheet tab, and when selecting the other focused worksheet/tab, update it accordingly (i’m not sure if this will actually make it easier to implement visually, or not, but i’m just trying to help, i’m not a great programmer)

suggestions on why this would be a good/bad idea?

suggestions on alternate ideas similar to solving my visual problem? (can i open the same workbook in a different instance and have both the same file open, and have non-conflicting saves?)

I assume that what you are describing is a desired workflow which you have not yet achieved.
If I misread your question, please explain!

  • One option (which is often the purpose of grid split requests that I have seen) is the “freeze”. This makes top row(s) and leftmost column(s) “persistent” while scrolling. Find the Freeze options on the View menu.
  • The true split provides a more flexible solution, where you can scroll panes independently, while rows stay in sync over a vertical split, as well as columns over a horizontal split. The split handle is a dark marker on the scroll bars. Normally they are at the ends of the scroll bars. Drag the marker(s) along the scroll bar to achieve your desired layout.
  • Max flexibility is achieved with separate windows. Find the New window option on the Window menu. The window title bar will indicate with colon and number after the file name, to signify that you have multiple windows opened to the same workspace.

I am not sure what you mean by “instance”. Technically the New Window does not give two separate instances, it is two views into one instance. I.e.: When you change data in one of the numbered windows, the change will be reflected immediately in the other(s).

no, it’s not freeze option - that’s for within the same worksheet, not the same book

i think it actually is the ‘new window’ function - i found the bug/feature reqeust here: 42428 – Split-pane window for side-by-side / above-and-below editing of a single document

suggesting it’s a window manager issue, not an internal fix that’s required (or rather, it’s already been addressed)

So - why doesn’t New Window solution fit you? (noting that the bug you mentioned is for Writer…)

sorry, forgot to flag it

in windows, while holding the right ctrl+shift and closing the window, it will remember the window size and position - is there a way to do this with multiple windows open?

given the solution has ‘been found’ i doubt i’ll get a reply so i’ll submit a new q
