Table of Contents; limited to first words of paragraph only

I am creating a Table of Contents of a legal document. The paragraphs have outline numbering. Each paragraph has an introductory phrase plus the paragraph content. I would like to limit the entry in the ToC to the introductory phrase. Is there some formatting character that I can use to delimit the text that will appear in the ToC?

example:
1.2.1 Introductory phrase. paragraph contents Aliquam eu nunc. Aliquam lorem ante, dapibus in, viverra quis, feugiat a, tellus. In turpis. Praesent blandit laoreet nibh Aliquam eu nunc. Aliquam lorem ante, dapibus in, viverra quis, feugiat a, tellus. In turpis. Praesent blandit laoreet nibh.

Just a tip:
Split the text into two paragraph, and format the secont paragraph with a different paragraph style (what is not a part of the Outline Numbering).
I can not suggest you any method, what can use a half of a paragraph in the TOC.

1.2.1 Introductory phrase.
paragraph contents Aliquam eu nunc. Aliquam lorem ante, dapibus in, viverra quis, feugiat a, tellus. In turpis. Praesent blandit laoreet nibh Aliquam eu nunc. Aliquam lorem ante, dapibus in, viverra quis, feugiat a, tellus. In turpis. Praesent blandit laoreet nibh.

Use Insert|Table of Contents and Index|Index Entry.

To avoid having your index-made TOC in alphabetical order, put all entries in a user index. Presently, only the built-in Alphabetical Index is sorted. Any other index lists its entries in page order.
