On a Libre Office document all the images disappeared, replaced with empty frames and Image numbers. I loaded the latest version of JRE but there has been no change. Help!
OS name, LO version, save format?
Meanwhile, go to Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>View and see if Display *Images & objects` is ticked. If not, tick it (update may have reset it – Windows?)

EVERY image of 20 years disappeared…the only thing that shows up is a “box” that shows where each image was: “IMAGE1 Copy1” w/ icon of sun&mountain and ONLY the written title. 10000s of images. STUPIDEST button to ever have on any computer!!!
This is not at all a solution to the initial question. Please delete it (only you can do that) and repost as acomment under the initial post.
The fix in your case is easy: go to Tools>Options, LO Writer>View and tick box Images & Charts; or tick menu View>Images & Charts.

Your directions: under TOOLS…there are only these choices: UP DATE Prot. Doc. MACROS
NO IMAGES & CHARTS!!
Have you opened Options, the very last item in the Tools menu? You didn’t mention your OS; if you’re under MacOS, you should go to the Preferences menu. Otherwise try the tick box in the View menu (you didn’t specify your LO version either; the UI changed a bit in 24.x with more items in the View menu).

In Writer, go to the Help > About LibreOffice menu and click on the Version Information button so to save it to the clipboard. Then paste it here using Ctrl+V.
