I couldn’t get this working directly in an image object before, whatever I tried. I’m a bit confused
There is probably a reason, but it is not a fact that it can be found quickly.
The most likely reason is that not all gif animations downloaded from the internet are valid.
I can play animated gifs in Writer in

I can see the animation in full.
Only the first frame is visible, no animation. I will check on other comupters and see if I need to file a bug report.
