The underline under misspelled words is not showing

In writer, I have “AutoCorrect while typing” checked. I also have Automatic spell checking enabled (but have tried it without being checked).

But, when I type in text, I never see any underlinings telling me I have potentially misspelled words.

For example, in Writer, the text: abcde r2d2 c3po

doesn’t give any indication anything is misspelled. I’ve tried other options but they mostly just bring up the spelling dialog to go through each word.

Would someone let me know how I get the underline under possibly misspelled words to appear?

Thanks!

A common cause for the spell checker not working is that no language was assigned to the text. In that case, no spell check will take place. It’s also possible that your user profile has become corrupted. When that happens, the spell checker often fails.

We can’t see what’s going on in your file. Please upload a sample document here so that we can help you narrow down the problem.

English USA is set for the language and this problem happens on any file I try to create – so there is really no need to send you a particular document.

Since I’ve tried everything and you haven’t given me any information on what settings I could have wrong (or how to check for a corrupted profile, which doesn’t seem to be the case either), perhaps this problem is a bug?

Version: 7.5.4.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US

Thanks again.

For the user profile, see LibreOffice user profile - The Document Foundation Wiki for help.

Do you have a dictionary for English US? Just asking.

Try Apache OpenOffice Community Forum - [Tutorial] Spell check and Language configuration - (View topic) for a more thorough treatment of what can go wrong with spell checking.

Please leave that decision to the people hanging out here. This is standard procedure. You can, of course, ask us to use our crystal ball, but that will cost you.

Yes, the manual spell checker works fine.

This isn’t a particular document issue. The problem happens when creating any document (before saving). Thus, it’s a program issue.

Thanks,

I think I found the problem.

If I change the default font from “Liberation Serif” to say Carlito (and other fonts I tried), the underlining spell check stops working. If I change the default font back to “Liberation Serif”, then the misspelled underling works again.

That’s a bug since misspelled word underlining shouldn’t be font dependent.

Hope this helps!

Bugs are reported at https://bugs.documentfoundation.org. See 2. User Guide — Bugzilla 5.0.6 documentation for some help with that. Note: you will have to upload a file that shows the problem, so that the developers who investigate your bug report can try to reproduce the buggy behavior. Thank you.

In LO 7.5.3.2 Automatic Spell Checking is disabled when choosing Carlito (this is a bug). I can activate manually the Automatic Spell Checking. Choosing again Liberation Serif do not change/reverts it.
.
LO 7.6.0.1 does mark abcde as incorrect, but unmark it after r2d2 c3po Enter. But does not unmark it if instead of r2d2 c3po you write some real words.

Interesting. Is there anything special about Carlito? I don’t even have that font on my computer (Ubuntu Linux).

EDIT installed it from Download Carlito font | fontsme.com and tested in LO 7.5.5.2, installed today. Applying Carlito keeps the typo warning.

Not applying Carlito (or any other font such as Raleway) but changing it in Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Basic Fonts (Western).

First time only, it turns off Automatic Spell Checking, after that any changes to default font don’t affect it, at least not in the same session.
