I’ve placed tick boxes in my writer document. However, to the right of each tick box there is a C shape which I’d like to remove but how, please?

This is not a C shape but rather the label for the Check Box. Actual default label is Check Box. If you widen the field you would see the entire label name. To remove, go back into Design mode, right click the check box, select Control and on the General tab delete the words in the Label area. Close the properties & exit Design mode. All should be good.
