TOC Entry Incorrectly Applying Gutter Margin

I’m using version 24.2.0.3 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community. In an effort to simplify the troubleshooting process, I’ve attached a sample (17.5 KB) of the document.

The TOC is running off the right-facing page, and “ignoring” the left-facing page.

There is a bug? in standard TOC configuration with user-defined page size. The TOC structure line (+) defines a tab stop at right margin of a “common” sheet size. Since you custom sheet is smaller than common pages, the stop is too far at right.

(+) You access the “structure line” with a right-click in the TOC, Edit index, Entries tab.

This is easily fixed. Edit your TOC (see procedure just above). In the structure line, click on T preceding #. Untick Align at right and enter an appropriate distance in Tap stop position (something like 13 to 13.5 cm seems to do the trick).

PS: your document seems to have been edited with M$ Word which added its mess to your style collection. Perhaps, it was converted from some initial DOCX. Also you should pay attention to your page style sequence.

I am not sure it is the page size; I can create a TOC correctly at the same page size, margins and gutter. I am too tired to pursue the issue tonight but it does seem to be a curious puzzle.

@EarnestAl I already met this condition and I tracked it down to “unusual” page size. It may also be related to the order in which various things are configured. Anyway, there is a theoretical problem with tab stop definition. They are always considered relative to left margin (in LTR scripts; reverse for RTL). This is particularly inconvenient to reference the “other side” (or also “center”). I have ideas about it but they are, let’s say, “disturbing” and certainly not in ODF.

The file opens correctly in LibreOffice 6.4.7.2 which doesn’t have a Gutter setting but just sets the relevant margin.
It might be related how the gutter is set in LibreOffice, see Comment 3, 140561 – wrong term for gutter position in mirrored page layout

Yeah, I started this document back in early 2014 using MS Word. It’s been changed to ODF because I hate Microsoft and don’t use their products, work permitting.

I do find it interesting that I have to manually set the tab stop. I just feel it won’t be as good as an automatic setting, but I’ll get it done. Thanks for yours and @EarnestAI’s research into the issue.

I just tried copying everything into a new document and it seems OK.

Gutter has been offered for compatibility with M$ Word. However, I find the feature not well-defined with many problems in my advanced uses of such a facility (not working at all in some contexts, showing that the feature is not generic enough). In the end, I prefer to configure either for Mirrored pages with adjusted inner/outer margins or to create linked page styles with ad hoc margins.
