TOC Grey Background Prints

LOVersion: 6.4.6.2, MacOSX 10.13.6, enUS, Bill Sullivan. The dark background of the Table of Contents (TOC) on screen should disappear when it is printed. It did not disappear when I printed my TOC. I found the “solved” question “How to Remove Gray Background From Table Of Contents (Mac User)”. That solution: LibreOffice>Preferences>LibreOffice>Appearances.
Appearances is not a choice on that page in my Mac. Colors is, but when I changed the “Colors” on Index and table shadings to white that had no effect on the screen or on the printed page.

You talk about a “dark background”. This is not the usual background for “field shading”. To remind you that a TOC is Writer-generated and not user-written, Writer adds a light gray background which is controlled by View>Field Shadings. But this visual clue does not print.

Unless you have a dark theme (and dark themes presently have many problems), a dark background comes either from the paragraph styles used to format the TOC or from an added character style.

The paragraph styles controlling a TOC are:

  • Index which sets defaults for all others below
  • Contents n where n is the outline level of the entry

Character styles are applied after a manual operation of the user who is free to choose any of his liking; so there is no generic way to tell which was used

Another possibility is some manual application of a background colour. To remove it, select the TOC and Command+M.

If all these suggestions fail, attach an anonymised sample version of your document (max 2-3 pages) for analysis.
