Toolbar doesn't show cell and text colors

In Calc when a select a cell the toolbar doesn’t show the current colour of the cell and text, it only shows the last colour used.
Is there a way to show the colour of the selected cell? In AOO it works like that.

cell colour

This button is used to change the background color of selected cells.
The current background color of selected cells is visible directly.

Yes, I know, but how do you tell the text colour without inputting text? It’s annoying to input text every time to know what the colour is. In AOO when I click on a cell, the toolbar indicates the text colour of that cell.

The button is used to set font color, not to display it. To see the properties of a cell (including font color), you use “cell properties” dialog (Ctrl+1). And which workflow requires to know the color before you have text there (not to mention, that using styles is the preferred way)?

It is completely backward idea - to have the button that applies a color to switch to the current cell properties. That used to “work” the same way in LibreOffice Calc, too, which meant that every time you wanted to apply a highlight to a cell, you couldn’t just press the button (it applied the current color, not the last used one: when you had the font color black in a selected cell, pressing it would apply black, not the last used red) - until it was fixed in version 3.6 (2012).

@hpreitler yours is a different issue and should be in its own question.
Click Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Accessibility and set High Contrast to Disabled

found. And is solved for me.

I usually go to the Format menu, but @mikekaganski pointed out the shortcut key. Cool.

If you are inclined to use Styles rather than Direct Formatting, when you have the Styles Manager open in the sidebar, the cell’s style will be highlighted.

Something that I haven’t investigated is the Show previews checkbox in the Styles Manager. If I create a new style that has red bold font, when the Show previews checkbox is enabled, I expect the new style in the list box to be red bold. It isn’t. However, if this feature works for the OP, perhaps this would help. See page 156 of the Getting Started Manual for an example.
