Top margin does not show in Libre Write 7.4

The top margin is not showing up in Write…

How to fix this?
Thank you ahead of time.

@layd1990
Please show the Formatting marks (CTRL + F10) and check the page properties (menu Format | PageStyle | Page | Margins). Is the Top Margin = 0?

Thank you for replying:
I only get screen options for the lapptop, not for the document when pressing Ctrl+F10. Yes, the Top Margin is set to 0.79.

Problem solved. Thank you!

The manufacturer of your laptop has chosen to use to F keys for laptop functions and rely on you to press the Fn key at the same time as the F keys to use the F functions. In that case either

  • Use Ctrl+Fn+F10 Or
  • Find instructions from your laptop manufacturer on how to swap the setting so the F keys really do operate the F functions. The alternative functions would then be accessed by pressing the Fn key + the F key.

Ah. I see. Thank you. I’m an old guy still using a slide rule, so I’m always learning new things these days.

Slide rules were in invaluable learning tool. You had to keep the order of magnitude in your head which meant you had to “follow” your computation and understand the global picture. This is missing nowadays. (I still like to use my slide rules.)

Yes, me, too! I still have my brother’s slide rule made of bamboo and ivory. Very expensive in its day. I keep a couple of cheap plastic ones laying around that I use often. I think the beauty of it, which I didn’t appreciate “in the day”, was that such tools gave the user a perspective of scale and how analog mathematical algorithms allowed a real world spacial view of the mathematics itself, unlike calculators. Similar to analog clocks versus digital clocks: Someone who learns to tell time on an analog clock develops a spacial relationship of time, a concept I still use. If someone says I’ll see you at 3 o’clock, I see that relationship as a spacial relationship on that imaginary Regulator clock I see in my mind.

Your screenshot demonstrates nearly nothing. With some text contents, it would have been better.

Check View>Show Whitespace and tick it.

PS: when asking here, always mention OS name, LO version (with at least 3 digits, 4 is better) and save format.

Thank you for replying:
I have OS Windows 11, version 7.4.5, no other numbers following the version#.
Here is a screen shot with words on the first line:

Sorry, I do not understand by what you mean by “save format”.

Have you verified the View menu and its Show Whitespace item?

Libre Office version 7.4.5

Ah. There it is. Thank you. Problem solved.
I appreciate your help.

Writer can save your documents according to various “standards”. Formatting is guaranteed to be preserved if you save native, i.e. .odt. A document may also be saved in M$ Word formats (.doc and .docx) but these formats are proprietary and not described in a public specification. Consequently, the translation is based on guess work, meaning some features may be erroneously converted. Add to that there is no one-to-one correspondence between features in both suites. Some are present in one not in the other. You understand then it is preferable to record your documents in .odt LO Writer format.

Well explained. Thank you.
