Ubuntu 16.04 Libreoffice Base will not start

I installed LO Base5.1 in Ubuntu 16.04.1 and tried to start Base . I get the following error:

General Error.
General input/output error.

I get this message whether I try to start Base from within LO or from the command line or from the Main Menu (I am running gnome-flashback).

That’s not much to go on. What seems to be the problem?

I just did the following:

sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get install openoffice

Everything works now.
