Underlined text becomes highlighted during redaction process

Windows 11 Pro version 22H2 Build 22621.1555
LibreOffice version 7.5.1.2 (x86_64)

  • Open a text document containing underlined text in Writer then select Tools>Auto-Redact.
  • Create text target(s) then click on OK, which launches the Draw module.
  • It is at this point that a preview of the redacted text appears but there is also an unwanted effect in that any underlined text in the original text document becomes highlighted. It happens whether the underlining was created in Word or Writer.

I attach two PDF files. One has no underlined text and one has underlined text. Both redacted using Writer and Draw using the same method. These are finished states, not intermediate states.

LO Notes no underlining Redacted.pdf (40.3 KB)
LO Notes with underlining Redacted.pdf (40.3 KB)

I hope this helps to fix the issue. It may be a Libreoffice bug?

Thanks for any help.

I don’t reproduce this behaviour. The highlighting occurs only on similar text (target). If underlined text (whether styled or direct formatting) is not one of the targets, it has no highlight.
Olease, mention OS name, LO version and save format by editing (= modifying) your question. For better diagnostic, attach a sample file.

EDIT: from built-in help, this seems to be an intermediate state to show you where redacting occurs. As explained, this highlight is replaced by white or black rectangle when you export the redacted document.

I have decided it is a bug so I have reported it. Bug No. tdf#155008.

Probably bug 154235 – Underline blends with bold text in Liberation
solved in 7.5.3, you can test it from pre-release

Thank you for the suggestion but I don’t think that is the problem. The problem is unwanted highlighting of text when the ‘Draw’ module launches after choosing the text for redacting in Writer.

I have confirmed by further testing that it only relates to underlined text and nothing to do with the text being ‘Bold’.

I don’t install pre-release versions but I have now updated LibreOffice to version 7.5.2.2 but that has not fixed it. Hopefully the next stable release may fix it now that I have reported the bug.

Don’t afraid to use pre-release version :-). Or you can install daily build → /master/current, it is parallel Development instalation, it doesn’t change your actual stable version.

Because you reported the bug, maybe you will be invited to test it in newer version, and then what will you answer? I haven’t mood because I don’t believe to pre-realease or dev version?

The original post related to my HP desktop machine but I have discovered that the same thing happens on my DELL laptop, which has: -
Windows 11 Home version 22H2, Build 22621.1555, and
LibreOffice version 7.5.2.2 (x86_64)

This site is not a forum where you participate in a chronological thread. It is a Question & Answers site where each answer suggests an alternate solution to the problem described in the question.

By using Answers, you violate the site rules. Your replies should have been posted as comment below the relevant item.

Answers may be reordered by the site engine on “relevance”. Therefore you’d lose the chronological flow of your “non-answers” making it difficult for a new visitor to understand what is at stake. In addition, the “non-answers” count displayed on the home page could prevent regular contributors to look at your question, considering it has been solved multiple times.

I wasn’t aware of that so thank you for advising me.
