I had version 4.2 installed and then I installed version 5.01, now I have both versions. Can I safely remove the older version?

Yes. Binaries & Profile folders are kept separate, so there should be no conflicts.
Note:
Uninstalling does NOT remove the Profile dir for that version. If you are certain that you do not want it, then remove that Profile folder also after uninstalling the program.
