Unusable Save Blocking All Instances

How do you stop Calc’s save blocking ALL OTHER INSTANCES? This is driving me insane.

I usually have a dozen spreadsheets open, and many of them are quite large. If I save one, it blocks input in ALL other Calc windows so that if you try to enter, it gives you the Gnome “this window isn’t responding, wait or kill” dialog. Even worse, it’ll randomly popup this dialog, so if you go to enter input in a different Calc window and are typing something, this dialog might popup right when you’re entering something, making you accidentally enter “kill”, which then kills ALL Calc windows.

This is an embarrasingly bad UI and I have no idea why it’s designed this way. One Calc window should be completely independent and not have to wait while another one finishes saving.

Is this just a bug or bad design in Calc or is there some configuration I can set?

This is bad design.

It does even block all other instances of all components because LibreOffice is one program for all types of documents.
Have you ever thought of using a database instead of spreadsheets? If this is not an option, Excel might be the one and only tool (or may be Gnumeric if you are running Linux).

Open Calc documents may contain links to each other.
Independence is unlikely. For example, the first document is in the process of recalculating formulas, and the second document, which needs to be saved, contains links to the first.
