I am using Windows 11 and LibreOffice 26.2.4.2. When I copy a document into writer, it changes the English to Marathi (I am not in India and am not using Marathi anywhere). It then translates back to English but not the original text. (The translation of the translation is not close enough.) This started within the past week. Any ideas what is going on or how I can stop it.
Save format? .odt or .docx? Please attach a sample file for analysis.
From where do you copy? Writer to Writer or from some browser/pdf?
One idea: Are you reading an auto-translated document in your browser and when you copy/paste get the original source?

Thank you for asking. The documents were .docx in google drive. I played with the settings in writer and seemed to have resolved the problem. I tried 2 more docx from the same folder and everything seems ok - not translations. If it happens again, I’ll save the files before trying to fix it.

Wrote too soon. Attached are the 2 saved versions. When I opened the English version, there was “application not responding error” when it settled, the text was changed to Marathi.

C7L4M.odt is not Marathi. Basically, it is Malayalam with equations and numbers Marathi.
It seems to be consistent; consequently, it is not caused by some Writer malfunction.
You wrote you “copy a document into writer” (in fact you paste whatever is in the clipboard after a copy operation). A clipboard item may be a set of variously formatted data. Usually you find there a “decorated” text and an unformatted one (plain text). It is possible that the source inserted into the clipboard both the Malayalam and English variants, the latter one with a lower priority or sorted second.
I suggest you repeat the procedure from the start:
- copy source text
- switch to Writer

Edit→Paste Special→Paste Special
A dialog appears to allow you to select a variant. See how many variants are available and which one is selected by default. Though this is primarily intended to choose among format of same data, it may be possible that the source stuffed data in several languages under some guise.
Please report here what you found.
PS: your C7L4.odt is heavily direct formatted. Independtly from the fact that character styles don"t exist in DOCX, you should use different paragraph styles for paragraphs with different layouts (obvious faulty use of Body Text for different contexts). Also Heading n should be customised instead of overlaying them with direct format.

I see google docs and also gdrive seem to have settings for this, but have not read about automatic translations without you activating this. (That’s why I suspected browsers first.)

Maybe check how you open files from gdrive. An open-with “Writer” from context-menu should get a file without alterations, but actually there seem to be several “extensions” from google available for translations.
Have you ever seen unwanted translations for local storage?
