Update has stopped Office working

Hello,

I have good reasons to remain on Widows 7 and until today was using v 25.2.3 and all was well.

Today a brief message on starting Writer said that something had been updated. OK, i clicked again to start and this failure came up: oops, new user and can’t attach screen shot…

It said that the following file was missing: api-ms-win-core-path-l1-1-0.dll

I searched and found that the latest version of LO requires Win 10 so I tried repairing the installation without success, then uninstalled and made a fresh installation of v 25.2.3

On starting Writer it showed the opening splash screen and then went into a loop of “Updating version” (or similar and then the splash screen. I broke out of that after many iterations, restarted Windows and can’t even get to the opening screen with the missing dll error above.

I’m stumped and any help (other than change to Win 10) would be gratefully accepted. For what it’s worth I have contributed in the past and will happily do so again if I can overcome this problem.

Best wishes to all,

David

Further research suggests that it is caused by the latest (?) version of Python and now I’m really out of my depth.

Try with:

General Installation Issues (Windows)

You have to find out, where you are…

  • I don’t thin it will help, but at first I would try to start LibreOffice in safe mode (this ignores the user-profile) and switch off internet access for this to prevent update activity. If LO starts try with a fresh profile and switch off the automatic updates before reconnecting the Internet-access.
  • If above fails, I’d try to de-install (again), then re-install your old version (as above: switch off internet before starting LO, then switch off the automated updates.)
  • Next level for me would be to go back to my last “working” system backup. If you don’t have one, I’d re-install Win7.

I usually recommend Linux but had no problems on Win8 and 10, after “hiding” the changes in GUI behind OpenShell. You may have your reasons, but I can only recommend to avoid any automated updates and to create a partition backup of your install.

Thanks for the responses,

Hrbrgr, I tried the installation link but nothing there fits the bill.

Wanderer, Thanks also, I’ll give your ideas a try tomorrow. At the moment my head is spinning, I’ll come back after another go.

Despite my head spinning, I tried the suggestion above of switching off the router while installing v 24.8.5.2 and it opened OK. I’ve turned off auto update and all seems to working well again. This version does and did everything I wanted so I’m happy to stay with it. (If it works, leave it alone!).
Thanks again for the replies.
David
