Running Linux Mint 22.1 with LibreOffice 24.2.7.2 that was installed from mint’s software manager.
I noticed that the current version of LibreOffice is 26.2.4, and I have download the .deb for that. My question is how to get there from here: should I remove the software manager version and install the .deb from scratch? Or if I install from the .deb will it cleanly upgrade the version I already have? And if I remove the installed version first, will I lose any settings, recent documents, etc.?
Maybe consider there is a reason, why your distribution does not provide updates. Maybe read also about Snap/Flatpack and why tgey exist. Then find out how your LibreOffice is installed and compare:
Who can know this? The admin of your computer?
IMHO a manual install will only add a second LibreOffice in your system (and may be confusing for you).
No install should affect your saved documents.
Usually settings are saved in your user-profile and are kept during installs. However a backup is always advised. (Errors usually don’t announce “please do a backup quickly, as I’m going to loose large chunks in short time…”
Usually I do a manual installation when I need to update the programs in my machine. Never tried flatpack or snap, but will consider it since Debian is very slow in releasing new versions in their repositories.
