Use Python to create / modify Calc files

Running LibreOffice version 4.0.4.2 on Windows 7 pro

What extension (if any) do I need to install to use Python with LibreOffice ?

I assume Python is used to control LibreOffice programs like Calc. Where can I learn more about how to create / modify Calc files using Python ?
