After using for a week or so suddenly froze and on re-booting got Welcome screen and only my templates offered, settings back to default. Searched for locked documents but PC froze again with same result. No longer seem to be able to use Writer.
Looking at others I am trying again but not opening a particular file which was converted from docx.
Does it only affect one file (docx) or more?

I have re-opened my documents except the one I suspect of causing the trouble and am managing. I had to redo my settings so am reluctant to test it again. I think it was all right a few days ago.

I can open both files without any problems.
You may want to try repairing LibreOffice in the Control Panel.
When working with LibreOffice, you should always save in ODT format, see:

I have noticed that you have done a lot of direct formatting in your document. To get good results, it is recommended to work exclusively with styles.

Thank you for your support and advice. I tried the Repair and it went well until the last 54 seconds remaining when everything froze. I pressed the red button and the PC booted up. I tried LibreOffice and Windows said it was either incompatible or an error and recommended re-installation. I have just done that and my Recent Documents are listed and the settings do not seem to have reverted to default. I am nervous about opening the particular document which seems to have caused the trouble. I might ask for a re-send in rtf format.
I do work in odt format. I do not understand the working with Styles.
